Ut.no is the first thing you should look at when you are coming to this beautifull country. If you are only staying a couple of days in a place or you are planning to drive around; no matter what you do; it has suggestions for walks from a couple of hours to a week of hiking; including suggestions to stay in cabins!

ut.no can be downloaded as an app on your mobile as well; thus you have a local GPS with you; but be aware that you are then reliant of your mobile data of your cell phone.

Alternativally you can invest in a standalone GPS with the option to load up your own local maps. This brings you the main advantage that your Cell phone´s battery is still available for emergencies or other base functions. And your cell phone can be safely stached away to prevent damage.

I have been using the Garmin GPS´s for a while now and the advantages are:

  • no mobile data access needed
  • normal AA batteries can be used; or recharged
  • weather resistant and long runtime

Free Garmin regional maps including the walking paths; cabins; ... are available for free on the net!

Normally I end up printing out the route from UT.no on a piece of paper and my mobile if I get confused ...
